James Vowles confident Williams could follow Mercedes to become ‘very strong’ in coming years
action press

James Vowles worked with Mercedes from the beginning of their entry into F1 back in 2010. The Briton was promoted to Motorsport Strategy Director before his move to Williams in the team principal role.

Under James Vowles‘ tutelage, Williams has had a resurgence, with the Thai-British driver, Alex Albon putting together a string of good results. This led the team to a seventh-place finish in the constructors last year. The 2024 season hasn’t exactly started well for Williams but Vowles believes they are on the rise and could become ‘very strong’ by the 2026 regulations.

James Vowles has been the team principal of Willaims since 2023.

I’m confident now that we do have a good amount of forward vision taking place in the background. That we have teams working, be it on an aerodynamic perspective or concept development ’26. And that’s going to be very, very strong in the years to come. And what we’re also trying to do is make sure our company is structured correctly, such that we can deal with almost three years’ worth of work in one, because that’s what we’re now asking of the organisation.

The Briton seems to be sure that he can push his team in the upcoming years to be on the front foot instantly in 2026 with the new regulations. Vowles was one of the key members who helped Mercedes transform into the powerhouse they were during the turbo hybrid era and thus, will surely try his best to push Williams toward a similar result.

Mario Andretti entrusts James Vowles with Williams revival

After Williams’ brilliant 2023 season, they’ve had a rather disappointing start to this year’s campaign. With the team still being on zero points after the first four rounds of the F1 calendar.

But, the former world champion, Mario Andretti still believes that the Grove-based team can still get better results under the leadership of James Vowles.

Well, James [Vowles] is very experienced. He knows what he needs [to do] and it’s something that sometimes you cannot accomplish overnight.

The American added how it is a long-term process to revive Williams to get it back toward the north end of the grid. Vowles is one of the most experienced people in F1 and will surely be even more motivated after Andretti’s kind words. Williams has a rich history at the pinnacle of motor racing and considering this, their journey in the upcoming years is going to be a fascinating watch.
