Coby White says the heavy minutes he's playing isn't the reason for his recent shooting struggles

Chicago Bulls ace guard Coby White is struggling to find his mark, and it couldn’t have come at a worse time. With the Bulls already severely undermanned and aiming to at least secure a slot in the Play-In Tournament, Chicago needs all it can get from the rising star.

However, White has struggled shooting, making only 2-of-14 from the field against the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday. Over the last three games, the former Tar Heel has gone 13 of 49 from the field, a cool 26.5 percent. However, despite the heavy minutes and the increased defensive attention, White isn’t keen on making excuses for his recent lackadaisical performances.

Second in total minutes played

Between the injuries the Bulls have suffered and the improvement that White has shown, the 2023-2024 campaign has been a breakout year for Coby. He’s averaging career-high numbers across the board, including total minutes played. As a matter of fact, the former Tar Heel ranks second only to teammate DeMar DeRozan in total minutes played.

When asked if the accumulation of minutes plays a part in his recent misfires from the field, White emphasized that he's not using it as an excuse.

“The minutes ain’t catching up. I just gotta hit shots,” White declared.

“The ball isn’t going in the basket for me. I don’t try to miss.”

Increased defensive attention

White’s offensive capabilities are no longer in question. With averages of nearly 20.0 points and 5.2 assists per game, White is routinely found at the top of opposing teams’ scouting reports.

As the season has progressed, White has faced increased defensive attention from opponents. Teams are keying in on him and looking to limit his effectiveness on the court.

“It’s been an adjustment just because this is something different,” White said.

“It’s a challenge. I’m going to take it head-on. Grow from it, learn from it, and continue to get better each day.”
