Pittsburgh Steelers Could Make Shocking Move In NFL Draft
Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers were in dire need of a quarterback upgrade, especially considering their lackluster options in Mitch Trubisky, Mason Rudolph, and Kenny Pickett.

Despite this, they still managed to secure a playoff berth, hinting at the potential with even a modest improvement at the helm.

In a bold move to bolster their roster, they opted for Russell Wilson and Justin Fields to lead their offense. However, their quest for quarterback talent may not be over yet.

General Manager Omar Khan hinted at the possibility of adding another quarterback through the upcoming NFL Draft.

“I think it’s not realistic that we’ll be taking a quarterback in Round 1, if that’s what you’re asking, no. There are some good players there, and I wouldn’t close the door on anything. If there’s an opportunity to improve that room, obviously, we’ll look at it, but like you said, we’ve got three guys who are on one-year deals and we have to be open to it.”

Although Khan ruled out selecting a quarterback in the first round, speculation remains high regarding potential picks.

With the 20th overall selection, they could have targeted talents like Washington’s Michael Penix Jr., who is currently forecasted as a late-first or early-second round prospect.

The dynamics of the quarterback competition are intriguing. While Russell Wilson is the presumed starter, the presence of the younger and potentially high-upside Justin Fields adds an element of uncertainty. With just one year to assess Fields’ potential as a franchise quarterback, there’s anticipation surrounding when he might take the field and how he could impact the team’s fortunes.

It will be interesting to see what the Pittsburgh Steelers end up doing throughout the 2024 NFL Draft.
